More wheel bearing woes

We have had a run on rear wheel bearings lately. Chris' 66 is suffering as well. This illustrates perfectly why it is important to get this job done correctly the first time!

the bearings on this car have obviously been replaced  as the seal looks recent, but the arm has never been apart and the reason the new bearing has failed because it wasn’t shimmed correctly, you can see the needle rollers laying in the bottom off the housing.

The problem with the handbrake is here, the long slot on the right of the backing plate should be T shaped and as you can see is all worn and knackered. This lets the handbrake operating lever flop around and not work the shoes. The handbrakes on these cars are notoriously bad anyway so need all the help they can get.

You can see how hard the previous did the nut up to try and get rid of the play in the wheel bearing, it is dished in like hell, and thats a 1/4” thick! The bearings are shimmed though and tightening the nut makes no difference.

Watch this space for the right way to do it!
